Dr. Weil, D.C. has many areas of wellness that include pet therapy, integrative medicines, fitness, and gardening. Wellness is not about finding one therapy to remain well; it’s about a balance that is achievable through a variety of modalities. Many times we think that if we choose to eat better, reduce stress, or go to a place of warship more often that our health will improve. Well, it may. However, a combination of all three of the previous examples will provide a better overall outcome than choosing one of the three by itself.

The Oxford journals has always been one of my favorite sites to go to. The information in each article can be more technical than I can understand sometimes. However, the depth that each article has in an abstract can be enticing and promotes a need to read more about the subject at hand. This particular article discusses how the mind adapts to duel language in adults and children.

The Mayo Clinic is also a website that I find myself frequenting often. There are ongoing clinical trials for human participation and that fascinates me. There is research on a wide variety of disease. They offer fellowships and have their own graduate school. There is endless information on all areas of Health & Wellness.

Milan Will Pay You to Bike to Work Instead of Using a Car

This article discusses the polution problem that is happening in many countries, including the United States. The air quality has gotten so bad that bicyclists will receive payment for the mileage that is put on their bicycle on the way to and from work. Some companies are monitoring mileage by an app for the bikes, some are offering bicycle purchases, and others are giving tax break incentives. Some cities such as Washington D.C. are supplying showers, bicycle repairs, and secure locations to park bikes. Many cities are improving and adding bicycle lanes on the roadways so that driving is safe (Beuker, 2016).

Several cities are mandating certain days of the week that motor vehicle use is banned. The pollution has become so severe that cities are trying to be creative and provide incentives for the population to use the two wheels for transportation instead of the four wheels that add pollution to the air. The convenience of a car may be a hard habit to break but the urgency to provide clean air to all populations should have been addressed many years ago (Beuker, 2016) There are health benefits beyond pollution control when choosing cycling as an alternative form of transportation. Heart health, muscular strength, and happiness comes from excercise. Wellness programs should be promoted outside of work and inside of work wellness programs. A connection between home and work life can be the bicycle.

On a person note, I gave up my vehicle almost two years ago and ride my bike as long as weather is permitting. I enjoy it immensely. It's a good time to enjoy the outdoors. When riding in a car we miss out on so much of our own environment. The birds in flocks, the deer grazing in a pasture, the sounds of a neighborhood as I drive past, and the beauty of the sky, the wind on my face, and sun shining brightly on my skin. Time becomes valuable and cherished. With each day there is a new experience. Each day I say hello to someone I have never met and others that do as I do. On days that the weather is fighting wth my adventures, I ride public transportation. It is inexpensive for a daily pass. I am not contributing to pollution, I am not purchasing gasoline or spending astronomical money on repairs or up keep on a vehicle, and I dont have to clean it either! My adult kids think that I have lost mind but they also thought that I went totally bonkers when I chose to go to college. What do they know anyhow? To me, I am happy with both decisions because I am making the world a better place: on a personal and professional level.

Diet to Fight Depression

Posted by [email protected] on March 8, 2016 at 9:45 PM Comments comments (0)

This article discusses how our dietary intake is used for comfort and used to resolve depression. However, there is a twist in which it states that it is the food itself that is causing ailment and depressive tendancies. We also have to take into account our environment, medication, and types of food that we choose to be subjected to on a daily basis. Foods with sugars and fats trigger dopamine receptors and seratonin pathways (Campbell, 2015).

We feel differently when our sugar levels are high or low. We have a sense of happiness, sadness, loneliness, or even mental illness. Food has a much larger affect on our mental state of mind than we may think. Food choice are an important key to wellness in many ways. Furthermore, for a person to be physically, mentally, emotionally , and psychologically well, there is a combination of areas that can be addressed (Campbell, 2015).

As each person goes through their daily routine there are internal choices that may or may not be chosen. Waking up with a headache and choosing ot go to work because of it are examples of this. There will be external environmental choices that are out of an individuals hands with no control whatsoever. The one part of our day that is up to each person, as an individual, is physical exercise and dietary intake. Those two areas in our day are options that are controllable. choosing to make those good choices over the alternative is entirely up to that one human being. Ultimately, each person is in charge of their own health and well-being. Doing what is best to keep health is up to one person and the answer is you. The mind, body and spirit is one. Treating it as a whole entity can create and maintain wellness (Campbell, 2015).

Happiness

The article I chose is about happiness. The article states that there is a very small percentage of people that have a negative heart function when they attend an extremely eventful, happy occasion. It is very rare, however, the left ventricle becomes weakened by the joyous event and cause it to have functioning problems. It has also been called happy heart syndrome. Cardiologists may need to take into account the form of care when a cardiac patient has been admitted to a hospital. Happy heart and sad heart have different triggers yet can both cause the heart to malfunction (Preidt, 2016).

This is such an interesting finding. We always want happiness in our life and promoting it is suppose to extend and provide a better quality and perhaps quantity of life. This is a new study and worthy of following.
